He has been famously known as the Shershaah of Kargil. He led two strategic missions during Operation Vijay in July 1999 (famously called at Kargil War) at Point 5140 wherein he led the successful recapture of the peak 5140 by killing six enemy soldiers (four of them in a hand to hand combat) and successfully radioed the message “Yeh Dil Mange More” to his Commanding Officer Lt Gen (then Lt Col) Y K Joshi. Post ten days of recoup, Capt Batra led another daredevil assault at Point 4875 (now renamed as Batra Top) to clear a narrow feature with sharp cuttings on either side and heavily fortified enemy defences. Capt Batra engaged the enemy in a fierce hand to hand combat and killed five enemy soldiers at point blank range. Without any regard to his personal safety, he crawled towards the enemy, rallied his men and achieved nearly an impossible military task in the face of enemy fire. He made the supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army and was awarded the highest military award “Param Veer Chakra”
